747 *tonight* + Spring Break TRIP + (last) Bake Sale for Haiti + Theology Pub + more!

Have you been receiving our online daily devotions for Lent?  I'm told that they are very meaningful, and we still have many more days of Lent to go.  Information on subscribing can be found below.

Spring break is around the corner.  Spend your spring break doing something meaningful as part of a community.  We'll travel to Baltimore to spend a half week serving food to people who are hungry, playing with kids, serving people who are trying to put their lives back together, playing games with people living in a nursing home, and exploring the harbor!  You really don't want to miss this!

God almighty, in this season, help us to re-focus our lives on you.  Help our community to love and support everyone we meet.  In the name of Jesus we pray.  AMEN.

Ash Wednesday at 7:47pm in the BISTRO + Theology Pub (tonight) + Hypothermia Shelter + Lenten Devotions + MORE

Lent begins tomorrow with Ash Wednesday.  It is a time of trying to tear down the barriers between us and God, to grow closer to God, and to focus on how we can follow Jesus in living our lives in tune with God.  We kick things off with a special Ash Wednesday worship service at 7:47pm in the JC Bistro.  Then, we'll be sending out daily devotions from then until Easter (4/4/2010).  See below for information on subscribing by email, RSS, or Facebook.

Speaking of following Jesus as we live our lives, we will be heading to the Bethlehem Luthern this Friday to play games with guest of the hypothermia shelter, and to provide hospitality and entertainment.  This is a great experience that you won't want to miss!

Lord God, help us to set our sights on you, and to remove the things that separate us form you and each other, so that we can fully live our lives for you.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

King Cakes (tonight) + Ash Wednesday + Theology Pub + Hypothermia Shelter + Lenten Devotions + much MORE!

One of the things I love about snow is how it can bring a community together.  I saw more of my neighbors outside shoveling and playing in the snow in one day than I would typically see across weeks during the summer.  When it is cold and snowy, people seem more willing to lend a hand to make sure you aren't stuck, overworking, or without enough food.  The trick is to keep building community even after the snow melts.

The next week will be very busy for us, with: a bake sale for Haiti, baking King Cakes & watching the Olympic opening ceremonies, a Theology Pub, worship for Ash Wednesday, and helping out at the hypothermia shelter.  If you've been looking for a time to start getting involved and meeting people -- this is it!  Also, our daily Lenten devotions resume on Ash Wed. (2/17), and instructions on subscribing are below.

Lord God, we meet you at the foot of the cross.  Help us to overcome our discomforts, fears, and cold fingers so that we can boldly serve you.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

Worship for 2/10 is *ON* (for those who can walk, please don't drive in)

The snow is pounding again and GMU has been closed for 5 days now.  I'm guessing that some of you snowed in on campus have a bit of cabin fever.  Fear not!

We *will* be having worship and games on campus tonight regardless of the weather for those of you who can walk, but please don't drive in.  Matt Goldenberg will be hosting us in his dorm: Liberty B 207.  In case you aren't familiar with it, Liberty Square is between Presidents Park and the Aquatic Center.  You'll probably need to call me (703-829-0220) to get in.  We know everyone is probably starting to get cabin fever, so bring a friend if you want.  ALL are welcome!

Tentative agenda for *tonight*, Wed. 2/10/2010:
--> 6pm - games (feel free to bring one if you want) -- assuming I can get there, I'll bring whatever is easy to carry, and a couple pizzas.
(Even if I can't make it, Matt is baking cookies for everyone!)
--> 7:47pm or so - worship (ending by 9pm), very loose -- a couple songs and a short devotion.
--> 9pm - more games?  (until people want to leave or Matt and his roommates decide it is bed time)

Once again, stay safe and please don't drive in!   Questions?  Call 703-829-0220

Theology Pub + Worship + Baking King Cakes + Hypothermia Shelter + Spring Break + more!

Do you find time for real face-to-face relationships?  It can be hard to overcome the information overload in our world of email, texting, facebook, twitter, blogs, phone calls, hulu, and many other distractions....but there is something so powerful about sitting where you can look into someones eyes when you talk to them.  When you can commit yourself to being fully present in the moment, listening to each other and taking the time to process what you are hearing without distractions.  If you crave real discussions, turn off the computer, ignore your phone, and take the time to interact with those you meet.  This is the kind of interactions that Jesus had -- and they changed the world of everyday people like you and me.

THEOLOGY PUB - 5:15-7:15pm the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month in the Mason Rathskeller (lower level of SUB1)!  Order yourself food and drink of choice and we'll have a non-judgemental chat about life, God, faith, and the intersection of all these things.  The next one is Tuesday 2/2/2010. (HINT -- that's TODAY!)

747 Creative Christian Worship - Wednesdays at 7:47pm in SUB1 room B (3rd floor).  We gather to worship including interactive discussion, song, prayer, and much more!  EVERYONE is welcome and we think everyone has valuable insights and things to offer.  See http://GMU747.org

BAKE SALE FOR HAITI -  Fridays 11am-3pm - The first check to LWR is getting put in the mail tomorrow -- for $738.69 -- wow!  Thanks eveone! Matt is going to keep doing the bake sales for Haiti for a while on Fridays.  Profits will continue going to Lutheran World Relief to help those suffering in Haiti.  Bring baked goodies to help the sale, show up to help sell things or buy treats, or help however you'd like!

Baking King Cakes - It's a New Orleans tradition that we are going to share in, baking King Cakes!  No experience or supplies needed!  You'll get to take some home to share with your friends, and we'll take some of the others to local congregations to help build visibility and support for our activities!  Friday 2/5, 6:30-10pm at Lord of Life (meet at the Sandy Creek Shuttle Stop at 6pm for a ride). Questions?  Call or TXT 703-829-0220.  RSVP on Facebook.
Worship Carpool - Sunday 2/7 - Call or TXT me at 703-829-0220 if you'd like a ride from campus to worship on Sunday morning.

HYPOTHERMIA SHELTER: Friday 2/19 - Are you interested in spending an evening (or entire night) providing hospitality and support at the hypothermia shelter when it is at Bethlehem Lutheran?  They have lots of opportunities available: you can help serve food, or play games and watch movies with people, etc.  (They could also use help other nights if you want!)  If you are interested, let me know as we're ironing out the details ASAP. .

Lenten devotions - For the last two years, I've sent out daily devotions (via Facebook, blog, RSS, and email) during Lent.  This year, I'm hoping to get your help in writing some of the devotions.  If you are intersted, pick a day/scripture from the list HERE and let me know, then write a 150-400 word reflection and a 1-2 line prayer.  It's really not hard - let me know if you are willing to write 1-2 of them!

SPRING BREAK SERVICE TRIP - Join us on a trip to Baltimore to leaving the evening of Friday 3/5 and returning late on Tuesday 3/9.  We'll be helping 3 different charities and will have an afternoon to spend exploring the inner harbor area and such!  We're trying to keep costs as low as possible!  More details coming very soon, but let us know if you are interested so we can plan accordingly.

LOTS MORE COMING!  We're looking to focus on more regular service opportunities, Bible studies, game nights and other time to just hang out -- and much more!  Let us know what you'd like to do -- and when!

God Almighty, help us to be your hands and feet in our world, healing the world around us even as we pray for healing of our own brokenness.  In Jesus name, AMEN.
