====================

We are in the early stages of co-planning a student-led weekly worship service for next year.  I find myself curious about what it will look like.  We are looking at ways that it might be fully interactive and engaging to all of our senses.  We are starting basically from scratch, but will be using building blocks that are both extremely ancient and completely new.  God has blessed us each with different gifts, and we hope to creatively tap the endless possibilities to experience how the spirit is moving through our community.  I'm bubbling over with excitement at what ideas you might bring to the table!  A prayer...

I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is holy in my life.
God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no services.
But I need them.
Through prayer, I can sense my inner Strength, my inner purpose,
my inner joy, my capacity to love.
As I reach upward in prayer,
I sense these qualities in my Creator.
To love God is to love each other,
to work to make our lives better.
To love God is to love the world God created and to work to perfect it.
To love God is to love dreams of peace and joy that illume all of us,
and to bring that vision to life.

(Kabbalat Panim for Shabbat p. 8(126))

Martin Luther talked about how every encounter with water was an opportunity to remember the gift of baptism.  When you take your daily shower, you could think of this -- rededicating yourself to God each day.  When the rains pour down leaving everything soaked, remember that God uses water to replenish life, to wash our Sin away, to quench our thirst, and to nourish the flowers that are blooming all around campus.

O God, thank you for the rain that soaks us to the bone.  Thank you for the joy that wells up within us.  Thank you for life, resurrection, forgiveness, and grace.  AMEN.

The weather is getting warmer in fits and starts.  I'll be on campus most of the day tomorrow -- in and out of meetings.  Between meetings, you might find me playing some handdrums in the grass -- feel free to come join me (more info below)  There is something powerful about drumming in community - or making music of any kind for that matter.  The creative energies of each person intertwine, and we connect to each other and to something beyond us -- sometimes in unexpected ways.  Sometimes, a drum circle seems to be a time of communal prayer...

...I don't have a good transition here.  Sometimes that's the way life is.  I wanted to share that there are many exciting things afoot.  We'll be partnering with United College Ministries next year on several things: weekly worship on/near campus, a fall retreat, an alternative spring breat trip, and more!  If you would like to be part of this exciting planning, please let me know.

Dear God, thanks for opportunities, friends, and all the other wonderful blessings you pour over us.  May we always be open to noticing that you are walking beside us.  AMEN.

I spent the weekend in Nashville with over 80 campus ministers, pastors, and chaplains from across the country. It was both exhilarating and exhausting -- and I'm excited to be back on campus. The weekend left an impression on me -- there are so many thoughts, memories, and lyrics dancing across my mind. I've heard more stories than I can recount of how God is loose in the world, and of how love and grace are powerful forces that are literally transforming the world. I'm excited about all the possibilities for this community at GMU. God is at work here.

Dear God, it's unsettling to think of how powerful love is. Be with us as we live out amidst our questions. Allow us to swim in your grace. Move us with your spirit. Transform us and use us to transform the world. AMEN.

====================

I just finished spending a lot of time doing a long delayed redesign of our website (I'm still cleaning up the typos). Some of you haven't met me in person yet, so I'd like to share a quick blurb about myself: My name is Ben and I'm a sinner. I live a life full of high points and low points. I try to live in tune with God, but I often find myself marching to my own beat. Despite this, I live in the joy that I am loved and claimed by God and welcomed home by a wonderful wife who accepts me in all of my oddity. For more on me, explore the website.

Martin Luther described Christians as "simultaneously saint and sinner". As Lutherans, we believe that saints are forgiven sinners -- nothing more or less than that. Being a saint isn't about following all the rules, it is about who I am in the eyes of God -- is't about relationship to God. It doesn't mean that we aren't still sinners, but that our sins are covered with the righteousness of Christ. This is part of the context behind Martin Luther's saying "Be a sinner, and sin boldly, but believe and rejoice more boldly still!" (translations vary)

This doesn't mean we don't try to live in tune with God. We seek to love God and neighbor, to show mercy and forgiveness, to care for Creation, and more! Yet in all of that, we know that what we are doing isn't about being "good enough" to earn anything -- we are loved and accepted by God for being who we are. We are forgiven sinners.

Dear Lord, Thank you for loving and accepting us. We seek to do your will so that we might grow closer to you. Help us to listen for your voice -- to understand what you are calling us to do. AMEN.
