I'm Terry Hannon, and I'm delighted to be working directly with the students at George Mason for the coming semester!  I've met a number of you already, and I hope to get to know you better, as well as meet a few more people.

We give thanks for Vicar Jeanne's ministry during the past year and we wish her well as she continues to proclaim God's amazing grace in a new place.

Our prayers are with you all during exam time.  I encourage you to take a short break from your studies Wednesday night and join us for worship at 747!

In this time of thanks-giving, know how grateful I am for your ministry to and with young adults on campuses throughout this country and for the partnership that we share in this ministry.

Dear campus ministry colleagues,

Interfaith Youth Core has asked me to pass along news below regarding an upcoming Interfaith Leadership Institute  (January 12-15 in Atlanta).  You, your students, or your colleagues may be interested in applying to attend.

Campuses are asked to apply in (ideally multi-faith) delegations of up to 5 individuals, including at least one staff or faculty member.  This could make the event a great opportunity to build on or start new cross-campus relationships.

Please note the November 28 deadline.  Applications in before October 31 qualify for a $50 discount.

Sue

Dear Colleague,

Students across the country — supported by campus faculty and staff like you — are using the Better Together campaign to amplify the impact of interfaith efforts on campus.  Some are bringing interfaith action to campus for the first time.

Whether your campus pioneered interfaith programming or you're just getting started, attending an Interfaith Leadership Institute (ILI) is a powerful way to support your students.

While you're there, you will have the opportunity to plug into and learn from a national network of staff and faculty who are committed to making interfaith cooperation a reality on their campuses.

Gather a delegation from your campus, and apply now to join us for the next ILI at Emory University in Atlanta, GA – January 12-15, 2012.  (This poster will help you recruit; just add your contact info.)

Applications due November 28.

(Apply by October 31 and save $50!)

Join us for powerful training, relationship building, and inspiration. Your students will learn to organize the Better Together campaign on campus to:

  • Mobilize large numbers of students to voice their values, engage with others, and act together;
  • Change campus by raising the volume on interfaith cooperation as a priority; and
  • Grow as leaders, building skills for campus work and beyond.

Help your students make your campus better together: Apply today!

Questions?  Please see our list of FAQs.

Or, feel free to send us an email at leadershipinstitute@ifyc.org.

All the Best,

P.S. – Please help us spread the word!  Forward this email to other schools, students, your colleagues, network list serves, and beyond.  Or, share the following on Twitter or Facebook.  Thanks!

150 interfaith leaders all in one place! Join @IFYC for an Interfaith Leadership Institute in Jan. in Atlanta. Apply by 11/28. ifyc.org/ili

Greetings!

The 2012 ELCA Campus Ministry Conference will be held in conjunction with the 2012 Global Conference of Chaplains in Higher Education June 25-29, 2012 in New Haven Connecticut.  For more information regarding the conference go to:

The Campus Ministry Staff Advisory Committee discussed several options for how we could gather as ELCA campus ministry staff in the midst of the larger community.  Rather than adding an additional day, they are proposing that we gather as an ELCA community the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, June 27 in lieu of the outing to Mystic Seaport.  Kristen, Erin, and I will be working with Kari Keyl, campus pastor at Yale, and Callista Isabelle, associate university chaplain at Yale (and an ELCA pastor!) to make arrangements for our ELCA cohort and plan to meet with them in mid-November.  We will be in touch in early December with more details.  Eligible Campus Ministry Agencies (CMAs) will once again be able to receive travel reimbursement to the event.

We look forward to this unique opportunity to gather with those engaged in campus ministry around the world!

              The Lord be with each one of you!

+++Come and worship--with us this Wednesday as we do each Wednesday at "In Community at 747" -7:45-9pm in Johnson Room D.

+++Come before Mason Madness and see the deeply moving movie "Question 7"-- It concerns a talented teenager in East Germany, under Communism, (about 1960) whose father happens to be a pastor.  This movie is important from both a historical and a religious view point.
                                              ---See the movie Friday Oct 14th, 6-8:30 pm in Johnson Room D

++Sexual Discussion time--resumes Monday Oct 17th-And Tuesday Oct 18th is the next "Theology Pub" Opportunity!!!!!

Be still and aware of God's presence within and all around.

2012 Global Conference of Chaplains in Higher Education

October 7, 2011

Dear Colleague,

We are writing to remind you about the global chaplains' conference sponsored by the International Association of Chaplains in Higher Education (IACHE). From June 25 to June 29, 2012 in New Haven, Connecticut, we will be welcoming religious professionals who serve college and university campuses to "Mosaics in Motion: Spiritual Leadership in a Multifaith World. This theme will be explored by looking at the core values of:

* religious literacy
* radical hospitality
* service with thoughtful reflection

The sheet will be our altar cloth on Wednesday evening worship time.
We need volunteers to be with the sheet--please come and help.  E-mail me, call me--and come and helpl!!!

+++Saturday Oct 29--A wonderful opportunity to attend a one day conference concering Christians in the Middle East!

This week we call to mind St. Francis of Assisi with his Feast Day Oct 4th.  The following prayer is attributed to him:

Lord, make us instruments of you peace.  Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkess, light; where there is sadness, joy.
Grand that we many not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.  Amen.

Blessings,  Jeanne Larsen, chaplain

Here is a special opportunity coming up at the end of October----

Dear Students,

        I am pleased to invite the students of George Mason University to a unique and enriching opportunity for your campus faith community. HCEF will be holding its 13th Annual International Conference on October 28-29, at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C. Through the generosity of our sponsors, we offer scholarships to cover the cost of attendance for the first 100 students who register.

        This conference represents a rare opportunity for Christians to enrich their lives intellectually and spiritually through knowledge of the Christian faith in its birthplace, the Holy Land.  HCEF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to building bridges of peace through dialogue and action, and to the presence and wellbeing of Arab Christians in the Holy Land. One important method by which this can be achieved is through global Christian solidarity.

        These Palestinian Christians face confinement by checkpoints and the separation wall, land confiscations and home demolitions alongside their Muslim neighbors.  The Christians in the Holy Land are an essential part of the society and peace process, but they are in danger of disappearing.  Since 1948, the Christian population in the Holy Land has dwindled from 18% to less than 1.5% due to immigration as a result of this oppression and > insecurity. Without a presence in the Holy Land, global Christianity would lose its living roots.

        We have lined up many dynamic speakers for you, about whom you can read more on the conference flier.   Dr. Hanan Ashrawi of the Palestinian Legislative Council is our keynote speaker.

        Please share and discuss this invitation and attached flier with your campus community. Students should register as soon as possible in order to take advantage of our limited scholarships.

        For more information about the conference or HCEF, visit our website at www.hcef.org.  I can be reached by phone at (301) 951 9400 if you have further questions.

        For registration, please contact Chiara Cardone at ccardone@hcef.org, or (301) 951 9400 ext. 206.  I look forward welcoming many students to this year's conference.

Kindest regards,

Looking ahead to the fall & an opportunity to learn about our church's ministry

As we look toward the beginning of a new semester, a new school year, let us ask, Who are we?  Whose are we?  What should we do?
                         As Micah says, Do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.  (6:8)

******Watch for announcements of our upcoming events during the first week of classes---747 Worship with UCM Wednesday--Pub Theology   Tuesday--Game night on Friday---and lots more, join us for any or all.******

  Here is an opportunity on August 2 for any of you who may be wondering about a call to the ministries of our church.
  Blessings, Vicar Jeanne Larsen
Dear GMU Students,

Have you ever thought about a career in the church?  Maybe someone has mentioned to you that you would make a great pastor or youth worker.  Maybe you just keep hearing that small voice in the back of your head urging you to think about ministry.  Maybe you are just curious about what going to seminary would be like.

Project Connect is an initiative of Gettysburg, Philadelphia and Southern Seminaries, which aims to help 18-30 year olds consider where God is calling them vocationally, specifically whether that may be into some kind of ministry in the Church.

To connect with young adults in our area, Project Connect will be hosting a gathering on Tuesday, August 2 at 7pm in the synod office. The office is located at 1025 Connecticut Ave NW (at the Farragut North metro station). We'll take some time to meet one another and then discuss how we sense God's call.  If you would like to attend the gathering, contact Pastor Meredith Keseley at pastorkeseley@me.com.  If you need a ride, just let Pastor Keseley know.  If you cannot make this meeting but would be interested in future gatherings like this, let Pastor Keseley know that, too.  Looking forward to hearing from you!

Rev. Meredith Lovell Keseley

LCM & our last Tuesday of the Summer

Greetings from LCM as we near the end of July and summer school---

#######Join us in our last discussion time on Tuesday July 28th; 1pm in Johnson 239--Campus ministry office######

                Justice and Mercy
Consider these words from the hymn "Bless All the Nations, Lord"
       Help us to love the world, just as you do
       Fill our hearts, Lord, with Christ's love
       That we all may give glory to you.
       Bless the hungry, and the weary,
       Show us all what we can do.
       Help us to love the world, just as you do.
       Bring peace to all the world, we trust in you.

Let us pray for the people of Norway in the wake of the massacre of over 90 children and adults..
May we continue to seek God's help to overcome the effects of evil and hatred.   Vicar Jeanne
