WORSHIP CANCELED + Other updates...

Worship tonight (Wed. 1/26/2011) is CANCELED because Mason is closing at 4:30pm. (See HERE.)

LCMGMU Inclement Weather Policy:
Generally, our events will occur as scheduled when Mason classes are in session.
Assume that if Mason officially cancels classes, our events are canceled as well.
Any EXCEPTIONS will be posted to at least http://twitter.com/LCMGMU and http://facebook.com/LCMGMU

Also, check out http://MLK.GMU.EDU for all the events that are part of Mason's official campus-wide celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- and also to RSVP to attend, if applicable!

Welcome back to campus!  I hope that you are staying warm and getting settled into your classes.  As you figure out your schedule, please don't hesitate to let me know if there are activities you are interested in, or would like to lead!

"To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." - Nelson Mandela

My dad always used to tell me about all my rights and freedoms, but was very clear about the fact that my freedoms end where the next person's rights begin.  When I read God's instructions in the Bible to do things like leave some food in the field after the harvest so that people who are poor or traveling can take it to eat ... or about to care for orphans and widows ... or not to have any unjust laws or laws that apply differently to foreigners -- it reminds me not just that God loves all people, but also that God wants us to respect the dignity and humanity of all others.  Then I see new layers of meaning in my dad's words -- and in the end I realize that I am only truly free if exercising my rights doesn't harm, or diminish the humanity, of anyone else.  My freedom should make others feel more free as well.

Lord God, help us to promote freedom and justice, following you to alleviate pain, oppression, and suffering wherever we can.  In the name of Jesus we pray, AMEN.

747 Creative Christian Worship resumes on Wed. 2/2 at 7:47pm in JC meeting room C (3rd floor, ask the info desk or call/TXT 703-829-0220 for help finding us).  We have this room almost every week, so we should be easier to find this semester!  ALL are welcome!  (Co-sponsored with United College Ministries.)  http://GMU747.org

Prayer Labyrinth: Mon. 2/14, Noon-4pm: JC mtg rm D. Drop in for 15 minutes or more to take a break from your stressful schedule to spend some time seeking peace and centering yourself in prayerful meditation.  (Co-sponsored with United College Ministries.)

Hypothermia Shelters: Winter is a particularly hard time to be homeless.  To help, Facets implements a hypothermia shelter program, hosted each week by various faith communities in Fairfax County.  Some example host weeks:
+ King of Kings Lutheran, Fairfax (Jan. 9-15)
+ St. Mark's Lutheran, Springfield (Jan. 30 - Feb. 5)
+ Lord of Life Lutheran, Fairfax (Feb. 6-12)
+ Bethlehem Lutheran, Fairfax (Feb. 20-26)
+ Holy Trinity Lutheran, Falls Church (Feb. 27 - March 5).
They almost always need more people to help (especially on weeknights)!  If you are interested in helping out sometime (i.e. cooking and serving food, talking to people and providing hospitality, etc.), let me know and I'll try to put you in touch with the coordinator at the hosting congregation.
