[UPDATED]: Worship + Hunger and Homelessness Action Week + T-SHIRTS + much more!

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 Theses (theological disputes, mainly against clerical abuses occurring at that time) on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany -- and it was this event that kicked off the Protestant Reformation.  It was a movement which resulted in the church no longer selling forgiveness for sins, in Christ being restored to the center of faith, in the Bible being translated to the everyday language of common people, and much more!

At this time, I am reminded that (although the Protestant Reformation is recognized as an event that occurred at a specific time) -- that the church is always reforming.  God is loose in the world, and the Spirit blows creatively in our midst, calling us to continually re-contextualize for our time and place the Good News of God's saving grace that is known through Christ Jesus.

It is a special time in the church year within the Lutheran Church, so it is a great time to join a local congregation for worship.  You can find a list of local congregations (arranged by distance from GMU) at http://lcmgmu.org/worship.html -- and you can let me know if you have any questions or are seeking rides from campus.

Lord God, we thank you for our ancestors in the faith, who stood up and followed where you led, reforming the church and passing the story of your grace down through the ages.  Help us to be open to following wherever you call us to lead.  In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Worship (w/special guests) + New T-SHIRTS + much more!

As a Lutheran ministry, we take seriously the idea of the "priesthood of all believers".  We are all called to be ministers in some way or another.  Do you think of yourself as a minister?  How do we fulfill our priestly calling?  Across our community, I'm sure the answers vary quite a bit.  (Feel free to share your answers with me if you'd like.)

If you feel that part of your priestly calling is to be a leader in this community, just let us know.  This ministry exists for you, and we love to have student leadership: planning service projects, game nights, Bible studies, worship gatherings, or whatever you notice we are missing!

Dear Lord, you have given us so many gifts.  Help us to listen for how you call us to use them to serve the world around us.  In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Labyrinth + Craft night + Habitat ReStore + New T-SHIRTS + much more!

Scroll down for info on:
10/12: Labyrinth
10/13: Worship: Chosen & Inclusive (JC Bistro)
10/15: Craft Night
10/16: Habitat ReStore

and much more!

We seek to provide a warm and welcoming environment for ALL persons.
As a community of the people of God, we are called to minister to all
people in our world, knowing that the world is often an unloving
place. Our world is a place of alienation and brokenness. Christ calls
us to reconciliation and wholeness. We are challenged by the Gospel to
be agents of healing within our society.

Today is National Coming Out Day, and Coming Out Week will be observed
all week long here at GMU.  Coming "out" can be a particular challenge
for Christians in the LGBTQ community, who may be concerned about
whether faith communities will still be welcoming and affirming.
Lutheran Campus Ministry at GMU have taken a stand on this issue:

We affirm with the apostle Paul that in Christ "there is neither Jew
nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor
female" (Galatians 3:28). Christ has made us one. We acknowledge this
reconciliation extends to all people regardless of societal barriers,
such as denomination, religious identity, race, color, national
origin, sex, age, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation,
gender identity or expression, veteran status, political affiliation,
and income bracket. Therefore, we follow the example set by Jesus in
welcoming all people. As members of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians
12), we work together to build up the community. We recognize that we
may not always agree on every issue and we affirm the right of each
person to exercise freedom of conscience and engage in faithful
discussion on any topic.

Because gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons are often
scorned by society and alienated from the Church, we wish to make
known our caring and concern. It is forthis purpose that we affirm the
following: that people of all sexual orientations and gender
identities share with all others the worth that comes from being
unique individuals created by God; that people of all sexual
orientations and gender identities are welcomed into this community
along with all people; and that people of all sexual orientations and
gender identities are encouraged to participate fully and share in the
general life of Lutheran Campus Ministry at George Mason University.

This affirmation of welcome has been posted on our website since we
adopted it over 2 years ago, and we mean it.  YOU are welcome in this
community.

Lord God, help us to share the amazing hospitality that you have
shared with us.  Guide us and we seek to understand and love each
individual who approaches  us, both as a community and as individuals.
We do this in following the example set by your son, Jesus the
Christ. Amen.

Scroll down for info on:

10/8-10: BEACH RETREAT
10/15: Craft night
and much more!

Our actions have consequences -- sometimes reaching far beyond what we could have imagined.  As you've probably heard, a student at Rutgers U was driven to suicide by the mean-spirited actions of his peers.  I'd guess that they couldn't have imagined the consequences of their actions.

In the diverse community here at Mason, we all have a duty to make, and keep, the community safe for all.  Even more, as Christians we are called to share Christ's extravagant love with the world.   It might sound daunting, but we can approach it one action at a time: making eye contact, sharing kind words, noticing the needs of the people around us and doing what we can to help.

Image what impact our actions can have if we boldly share love and compassion for all people, especially those who might be different from ourselves, whether that be sexual orientation, cultural background, religion, ethnicity, or other societal divisions.  Let us speak out for the dignity of all people -- and to befriend them and share compassion, love, and hospitality with them.

Awesome God, we pray for your presence and healing in the community at Rutgers University in this difficult time.  We ask your guidance in our actions, that we may share your love and hospitality with all we meet.  In the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
